Mick Fanning breaks silence over brother's tragic death

Australian surfing legend Mick Fanning has been plunged into mourning once again as he copes with the loss of his third brother, Edward, in Madagascar. The news adds another layer of sorrow to Fanning's already tumultuous journey, marked by personal tragedies and triumphs both in and out of the water.

Mick Fanning, a three-time world champion, has endured more than his fair share of trials. The devastating loss of his two other brothers, Pete and Sean, in 2015 and 1998 respectively, left indelible scars on the Fanning family. Yet, amidst the grief, Mick himself faced a near-fatal encounter when he survived a harrowing shark attack in July 2015. This traumatic event prompted him to take a hiatus from the competitive circuit the following year, highlighting the profound impact it had on his life and career.

Taking to Instagram to share his grief, Fanning delivered a wonderful tribute to his late brother, reminiscing about their shared love for surfing.

"Love you my brother," Mick wrote. "You taught me so much over the years about everything that life could deal up. The good and the bad you were my teacher. You introduced us all to surfing, the joy and freedom of riding a wave. The meaning of going to the ends of the earth to find waves to following a passion in the belief that surfing could be that ultimate job. As the years went on you would fall in and out of the ocean but your pure talent would always shine through. To where you ended up in teaching kids the joy of riding a wave. With out you I’m not sure what the world would of made of me so Thank you 🙏🏼

"Ed you had the biggest heart and were too loyal for your own good. Always sticking up for the underdog and caring for those who needed help. You gave everyone everything you had, and if you didn’t have it you’d still give it to them. You made your friends feel like super heroes and gave so many people the funniest memories that will last a life time.

"I know at times you found it hard to find your happy place. It warms my heart to know you found it these last few years. To hear the excitement in your voice each time we talked filled me with hope.

"I wish you could accept all the love people would give you. You weren’t perfect but no one wanted you to be. We just loved Ed. The Larikin who would throw a Shaka in every photo and would scream yeeeeew at the top of his lungs. As you dance down that final road into that eternal sunset please know we all love you mate. 🤙🏼🤙🏼 YEEEEEEEEEWWW HAHA🤙🏼🤙🏼

Thank you to all the family and friends that have shown us love and supported us during this difficult time. And thank you to Ed’s family and friends in Madagascar that showed him happiness is real. Much love."

Tributes have since poured in from friends and fellow surfers, as Coolangatta bodyboarder Stevie Maher, a close friend of Edward, took to social media to express his grief and extend his condolences to the Fanning family. "Firstly, I want to send my condolences to the Fanning family… My heart is broken to hear the passing of my best mate," Maher wrote. Aussie surf icon Mick Fanning struck by family tragedy

Australian surfing legend Mick Fanning has been struck by yet another devastating loss in his family. Reports have emerged confirming the passing of Fanning’s brother, Edward, who was in his 40s at the time of his death. This tragic event adds to the already heavy burden of grief that Fanning has endured over the years.

The Fanning family has faced multiple heartbreaking losses in the past. In 2015, Mick lost his older brother Peter at the age of 43. Prior to that, in 1998, another of Mick’s brothers, Sean, tragically passed away in a car accident at the young age of 20.

News of Edward’s passing came through a heartfelt message from Stevie Maher, a close friend of Edward and a prominent bodyboarder from Coolangatta.

Maher took to Facebook to express his condolences and share his grief with the Fanning family. In his poignant post, Maher fondly reminisced about the cherished moments he shared with Edward:

"Firstly I want to send my condolences to the Fanning family … mum Liz, dad John, sister Rachel and brother Mick,” Maher wrote. “My heart is broken to hear the passing of my best mate. I enjoyed and had so many amazing times with you Eddie. You were in my wedding party, had so many epic times together in Indo and we were just best mates. I’m goin’ to miss you Eddie and now you rest in peace.”

Edward, who had been working at a surf camp in Madagascar, leaves behind a legacy of friendship, adventure and camaraderie. His presence will be deeply missed by all those who knew him, especially by his grieving family and closest friends.

As the world mourns alongside Mick Fanning, we extend our deepest condolences to him and his family, hoping they find solace and strength in each other's love and the cherished memories they hold dear.

Images: Facebook / Instagram

"Roo-jitsu": Former cop fends off 2m-tall kangaroo trying to drown his dog

In an unusual and somewhat comical turn of events, a former Victorian police officer, Mick Moloney, recently found himself in a rather unexpected altercation with a kangaroo while out walking his dogs near the Murray River.

The story, as bizarre as it sounds, unfolded last Sunday when Moloney's peaceful stroll took a dramatic twist, involving an agitated kangaroo, one of his beloved dogs, and an heroic rescue mission.

Moloney, a resident of Mildura, was no stranger to the area and had often enjoyed leisurely walks along the scenic Murray River with his canine companions. On this particular day, his dogs were noticeably quieter than usual as they strolled by the water's edge. It wasn't until "Hutchy", one of Moloney's dogs, went missing that he began to sense something was amiss.

Describing his dogs as "always in the water," the former policeman began to suspect that the tranquil riverbanks might be harbouring an unexpected visitor. And his suspicions were soon confirmed when he laid eyes on an agitated kangaroo standing in the river, his arms submerged, and his gaze locked onto Moloney.

What unfolded next was an extraordinary encounter between man and marsupial, captured on camera and later shared widely online. In the video, Moloney can be heard demanding that the kangaroo release Hutchy from its grip.

Despite attempts to scare the kangaroo away, the situation escalated as the roo retaliated by striking Moloney and sending his phone plunging into the water. This unexpected punch-up left Moloney with a few scratches and a sore forearm, but both he and Hutchy ultimately made it safely to the riverbank.

Moloney shared the video on his Facebook page, where it quickly went viral, garnering hundreds of shares and reactions. The bizarre incident even led to some humorous commentary, with people joking about "roo-jitsu" and the unexpected martial arts showdown with the kangaroo.

Moloney, who is a mixed martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu teacher, emphasised that he did not intend to be cruel to the kangaroo, highlighting his love for animals. Despite the unexpected turn of events, he expressed that he has no plans to change his walking route along the river, suggesting that he and his dogs will continue using their favourite walking spot.

As Moloney playfully put it, "My tussling with roo days are pretty much done though, cause that thing was strong. Let's just call it a draw." The bizarre incident serves as a reminder that encounters with wildlife can take unexpected turns, even in the most picturesque of settings, and that sometimes, a little humour can help us cope with life's quirks and oddities.

Images: Tiktok

Richard Wilkins names and shames worst celeb interviews

Entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins has revealed some of the more challenging celebrities he’s dealt with in an interview.

Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall made the top of the list.

Wilkins shared in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald that the English singer, 62, is “probably the rudest person” he’d ever interviewed.

Wilkins said he had been asked to present Hucknall with a gold record at a record company function while Simply Red were touring Australia.

“Shook his hand, everything went all right,” Wilkins said.

The problem came the following day, when Wilkins, who was then working for MTV Australia, arrived at the since-demolished Sydney Entertainment Centre to interview Hucknall ahead of Simply Red’s concert that evening.

“I said, ‘G’day Mick’, held out my hand. He says, ‘I shook your hand last night, I don’t need to do it again’,” Wilkins revealed.

“He’s subsequently divulged that he used to hit it pretty hard back in the day, so I don’t know whether he was on good stuff the night before. I remember my boss saying to me that day, ‘If anyone ever treats you like that again, just walk out the door’.”

British actor Hugh Grant made the cut on Wilkins’ list, “I’ve always got on OK with Hugh Grant, but he can be very prickly,” he explained.

“And he’ll quite willingly tell you that the characters he plays are much nicer than the person he actually is. I MCed a publicity tour that he and Liz Hurley did. They were quite difficult to work with. He can be a prickly one.”

Not mentioned in the interview was Wilkins’ 2003 interview with music icon Prince, which he had previously named as the worst celebrity interview in his 2011 memoir Black Ties, Red Carpets, Green Rooms.

Wilkins went backstage at Prince’s Melbourne show to interview him and recalled he was told by Prince’s entourage that the exchange could only proceed if Wilkins also interviewed every member of Prince’s band, and included them in the TV segment.

He reluctantly accepted, but later found the band members weren’t too keen on a chat, including Prince.

“Ah f**k! This was going to be an unmitigated disaster and total embarrassment,” Wilkins wrote of the awkward encounter.

“It was awful”: Mick Molloy names and shames worst celeb interviewees

Comedian and morning radio show host Mick Molloy has opened up about the two worst celebrities he has ever interviewed during an interview on news.com.au's I’ve Got News For You podcast. The first celebrity to receive the "worst" crown by Molloy was singer Shania Twain.

“I’m gonna be fair here, I don’t know whether it was entirely her or the three women who were in her corner sitting inside the studio while we were interviewing her,” Molloy said.

In the interview that included Molloy’s former radio co-host, Tony Martin, Molloy told news.com.au, “They were rolling their eyes and guffawing at every question me and Tony asked at the time.”

Molloy shared Twain’s handlers kept interrupting during the interview and telling the two hosts, “You can’t ask her that,” which proved to be frustrating for the pair as they were only asking about things that appeared on a document given to them by Twain’s handlers.

“We said to them, but it’s in the press release! I’ve got your press release! We are reading from the press release!” Molloy said.

“It was uncomfortable; it was awful,” he said about the interview.

The second celeb to be named and shamed on the I’ve Got News For You podcast was Irish comedian Dylan Moran, best known for the comedy series Black Books.

“It was me and Jane Kennedy, and he came in and he just didn’t want to be interviewed,” Molloy said, in reference to Moran.

Molloy also said that Moran had issues with the first question they asked him in the interview, which was about the beginning of his comedy career.

“So, you’ve been a stand-up since ’92,” Molloy said in the interview, to which Moran replied: “Can I just say, you love dates in here and talking about how long ago things started. It’s really depressing. Can you cut this sh*t out right now.”

Looking back on the interview, the Triple M star said, “He was absolutely just not interested and rude.”

On the podcast he also shared his two favourite celebrity interviews, Sting, and Jason Alexander who played George in Seinfield.

“Sting turned up on his own, he came into the studio, he did the interview and then sat around for about half an hour just chatting to us about stuff,” Molloy said. “The whole time he was there, I never saw any ounce of affectation.”

In terms of Jason Alexander, Molloy shared he got to spend a fair bit of time with him while he was in Australia, describing him as “one of the nicest blokes I’ve ever met”.

“He’s so naturally funny, so brilliant with people,” Molloy said. “He couldn’t have dinner in a restaurant without eight people coming up to his table and he was a gentleman the whole time.”

Mick Molloy's new radio show, Mick and MG in the Morning, will be airing on 104.9 Triple M Sydney from 6-9 am weekdays.

Sir Mick Jagger slams comparisons to Harry Styles

Sir Mick Jagger has slammed the comparison between the veteran rocker and pop superstar Harry Styles.

Harry, a former member of One Direction whose solo career has seem him rise to the top of international music charts, has often been likened to The Rolling Stones frontman for their similar look and stage presence.

While the 78-year-old rockstar can see the likeness in their looks, Jagger believes this is where their similarities end.

Jagger told Sunday Times Culture magazine, “I like Harry — we have an easy relationship."

“I mean, I used to wear a lot more eye make-up than him. Come on, I was much more androgynous. And he doesn’t have a voice like mine or move on stage like me; he just has a superficial resemblance to my younger self, which is fine — he can’t help that.”

Harry Styles has long noted his love of The Rolling Stones, once calling Mick Jagger "the coolest man on the planet", and even impersonated Mick Jagger on 2017 episode of Saturday Night Live.

While being historically dismissive of the pop star, he has been accepting of his influence, even dating back to the One Direction days; as Jagger said of Styles in a 2015 interview, “He’s got it going on. I know him, he comes to see me in lots of shows. And yeah, I can see the influence. But I don’t say anything to him, I just tell him he looks nice. I like him. He’s very decent.”

The Rolling Stones are preparing to embark on their "Sixty" tour in June, with Jagger admitting that the shows have become more "challenging" as the band ages.

Mick said, “Rock’n’roll, or any kind of pop music honestly, isn’t supposed to be done when you’re in your seventies."

"Hitting rock bottom": Mick Fanning reveals life after punching shark

Despite fighting off a Great White shark live on television in South Africa five years ago, Mick Fanning says that fatherhood has been the greatest challenge yet.

The shocking footage was watched by thousands of shocked onlookers, with Fanning suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and nightmares of the accident for years afterwards.

It hasn't stopped Fanning from living his life, as he and fiance Breeana Randal welcomed their son Zander Dean Fanning just three weeks ago.

Fatherhood has been 'mind-bending' for the Penrith-born surfer, and is the pinnacle of a tough few years since the shark attack.

"For me, 2015 was such a down year," Fanning shared on 60 Minutes on Sunday night.

"I went through a divorce, had the shark incident and then at the end of it all I lost my brother. I was just totally empty at the end of it. I was done."

Fanning was also unprepared for the publicity storm after the attack.

"That was the one that just floored me. I was like 'what else? What else can be taken in a year?' At the end of 2015, I just hit rock bottom," he said.

Fanning opened up about the "emptiness" he felt for the 18 months afterwards.

"I felt like I had nothing to give, nothing to give myself, or to the people around me, or to family or friends. I just didn't see a way of coming back," he said.

"I've never felt that empty before, I just lay in bed, did nothing, wouldn't leave the house."

Five years on from the experience, he is now living with his wife-to-be and wants to grow his family.

"It's incredible,' he said of fatherhood. I guess everyone watching on from the beach that day, and on the live broadcast all over the world, thought the exact same thing," Fanning said.

"That's what helps, talking about it," he said.

"Not being shy to ask for help. There were times throughout the year where I was trying to hide stuff and my friends would be like 'what's up'. It wasn't just for the one, two weeks. It was six months, 12 months, 18 months."

"He never asked me how old I was": Actress claims she slept with Mick Jagger at 15

Actress Rae Dawn, the daughter of American comedian Tommy Chong, has claimed she spent a “fabulous” two days with Mick Jagger when she was just 15 years old in 1977.

Dawn, who played prominent roles in the 1985 films The Colour Purple and Commando, shared her underage fling with the Rolling Stones legend to the Daily Mail.

Dawn’s admission came after she claimed to have accidentally blurted out the news while taping a forthcoming podcast from The Hollywood Reporter.

“He wasn’t that much older than me in my brain. He was 33 and young and gorgeous with a nice body,” she described to the outlet in a quick attempt to get ahead of the story.

“It wasn’t a bad thing; it was fabulous. Totally rock ‘n’ roll. He didn’t make me do anything I didn’t want to do, but he was very vain, always looking in the mirror.”

Mick Jagger and Rae Dawn Chong in the 1985 Rolling Stones video, Just Another Night.

Now 58-years-old, Dawn says she slept with the famous superstar while he was still married to his first wife after meeting him at a friend’s home.

The actress was friends with the daughter of John Phillips, the singer of The Mamas & the Papas, and introduced herself to Jagger when they were both visiting Phillips’ home.

“He never asked me how old I was and I never told him,” she told the Daily Mail.

“It never came up. I remember thinking he was really cute. He had tousled hair. I thought, ‘Oh man, he is beautiful.’”

The pair ended up spending two days together in New York, according to the Daily Mail.

She insisted that any relations between the two was completely consensual and worried that the revelation would land Jagger in deep water.

“He did nothing wrong,” said Dawn. “He didn’t make me do anything I didn’t want to do.”

Dawn bumped into Jagger a number of times after the romance occurred. Years later he casted her for an appearance in the video for the Rolling Stones’ song, Just Another Night.

However, it seems their relationship as friends turned sour when Dawn publicly complained about Jagger’s “licky” behaviour on set.

“In real life, he was a great kisser, but in the film, he did lots of ‘licky’ things,’ she said. “I talked about that in an interview. He has a fragile ego. He hasn’t spoken to me since.”

F1 legend's son Mick Schumacher leaves family and friends "emotional" after podium tribute

Formula 1 legend Ross Brawn said Mick Schumacher’s celebrations after winning his maiden F2 race in Hungary reminded him of the Ferrari junior’s father Michael Schumacher.

Brawn, longtime F1 technical director, has been credited as one of the masterminds behind Michael’s seven world championship titles with Benetton and Ferrari.

He said seeing Schumacher junior securing his first F2 win at the Hungarian grand prix on Sunday was an “emotional” and “important” moment.

“I wasn’t at the track, but it was an emotional moment seeing him raise his arms to the sky, and I can’t deny that it reminded me of his father, Michael,” Brawn said.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Autosport (@autosport) on Aug 7, 2019 at 3:12am PDT

“Mick had to fight for the win and avoid making mistakes as he was harried all race long by Nobuharu Matsushita. I think the earlier the better, and just happy with the win now. I’ll celebrate with my family.”
